Periodontal Disease

Periodontitis, or gum disease, is a common infection that damages the soft tissue and bone supporting the tooth. Without treatment, the bone around the teeth is slowly and progressively lost.

In the worst cases, periodontitis disease can lead to tooth loss. And in the most serious cases, periodontitis can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack and a number of other health problems.

Periodontal Disease

It is extremely important to take preventative measures to avoid developing periodontitis. There are a number of risk factors for gum disease, but smoking is the most significant. Smoking also can make treatment for gum disease less successful.

Take proper periodontal care and reduce your risk of suffering from gum disease, by following these steps:

Brush the teeth with a suitable toothbrush and toothpaste at least twice a day, carefully cleaning the chewing surfaces and the sides of the teeth.
Floss your teeth to remove leftover food
Take extra care when cleaning around uneven tooth surfaces
After brushing, use a mouthwash to help prevent bacteria from growing and to reduce any inflammatory reaction in the mouth.

Are you suffering any of the following? They are warning signs of periodontitis:

Inflamed or swollen gums and recurrent swelling in the gums
Pain when the gums are touched
Receding gums
Extra spaces between the teeth
Loose teeth
Bright red, sometimes purple gums
Bleeding when brushing teeth or flossing
A metallic taste in the mouth
Bad breath
Pus between the teeth and gums
